Music Mondays - Crash and Burn

Crash and Burn

Today is Groundhog’s Day, which celebrates the weather forecasting skills of a rodent from the marmot family. For me, it’s a day to remember the classic movie starring Bill Murray as a local weatherman who is forced to relive Groundhog’s Day over and over again until he achieves the perfect version of the day. I think financially, we would all love to repeat one of our worst money days over and over again until we get it right, rather than having to fix what we did wrong over a period of days, months or years. On Friday’s podcast, I am going to be speaking with my friend Lauren from LB and the Money Tree, who recently confessed on her blog that she is in debt trouble again despite thinking she had changed her spending problems of the past. I am sure she now feels like Bill Murray in Groundhog's Day and wishes she didn’t have to relive the pain of dealing with debt.miss piggy

Debt Confessions

In a brave move, Lauren shared her personal low with the financial blogging community and opened herself up to judgment and ridicule; however, fortunately from the comments I read and one that I left, she discovered that she was surrounded by acceptance and support. You see, we all may set goals for ourselves and try to accomplish them, and sometimes you achieve them and sometimes you crash and burn, and when you do, it’s important for you to find the support you need to get back on your feet.

Crash and Burn Lyrics

Let me be the one you call

If you jump I'll break your fall

Lift you up and fly away with you into the night

If you need to fall apart

I can mend a broken heart

If you need to crash then crash and burn

You're not alone

'Cause there has always been heartache and pain

And when it's over you'll breathe again

You'll breath again

I love the song, Crash and Burn by Savage Garden because it tells the tale of a friendship and the support that’s available if one friend literally crashes and burns. My favorite line of the song is, “And when it’s over, you’ll breathe again…you’ll breathe again.”

Find Support When You Crash and Burn

I think when many of us go through a crash and burn like Lauren, it’s easy to feel alone and broken and wonder if you will ever breathe again, and the greatest joy we have in life is discovering that we are not alone after we crash and burn, there is a support network in place whether we know it or not. The only way that we are able to access this support network, though, is admitting that we crashed and burned.I love that Lauren owned up to her issues and confessed to her blog followers that she found herself back where she started. I know it was a painful confession for her to make, but I also know that she rallied a group of supporters to help her through this latest financial fail.Unlike Phil Connor's in Groundhog's Day, we do not have multiple retakes of one day to get our money behaviors right. The sooner we ask for help and support to get back on our feet, the faster we will get to a better place.

If You Need Support - Come to Me

I like to think that I am the singer in this song, encouraging someone who is in a difficult time to let go and crash and realize that I will be there to help pick up the pieces to help them move on again. I know that I have been this person for my friends, my family and my clients. I don't judge them because we are all bound to crash and burn at some point and it's not about crashing, but how you move forward that matters.I have definitely felt as though I crashed and burned in my financial situation more than once, and I am thankful that I had the support of my hubby and my family to pick me back up and help me learn to breathe again; because the greatest message of this song is that you will breathe again. There is no financial hardship or setback that will take the wind from you completely. Yes, it will set you back more than you anticipated; however, it’s not permanent, and with the right support, you will overcome it and move on to better things. Just like Phil.Gif Source: Giphy

If you were to crash and burn with your finances, whom would you turn to? Would you feel comfortable admitting it publicly or would you deal with it privately?
