First Time Meeting with a Financial Planner

On today's episode of Martinis and Your Money, I'm talking to Katie Brewer, a financial planner and owner of the company, Your Richest Life, about what a first meeting with a financial planner looks like. You should consider your relationship with a financial planner as a long-term relationship. Take your time to find the right planner to guarantee your long term success!

Podcast Notes

  • Katie has been a financial planner for 12 years.

  • She does fee-only financial planning and often works with couples and single women.

  • Katie compares your first meeting with a financial planner to a first date; if you don’t feel really good about that first interaction, keep “dating.”

  • Katie asks a few questions before the first meeting:

    • What state do you live in?

    • What is your partner’s name?

    • What is causing you to want to talk to a financial planner?

    • A truly successful relationship with a financial planner is one that goes on for many years.

    • Some questions Katie asks during the first meeting:

      • Have you ever worked with a financial planner before?

      • What are your 1-3 year goals and what are your 3-5 year goals?

      • Katie explains the difference between a fiduciary and non-fiduciary.

      • Shannon says to remember you can ask as many questions as you want when talking with a financial planner.

      • You should never feel like you don’t understand what just happened during your meeting.

TAKEAWAY: If you don’t feel comfortable getting financially naked with your financial planner, GTFO! You should never settle.
